Look closely at the teeth. Most had a bevel milled into the teeth on the engagement side while the opposite side was flat. if you flip the gear over you may get grinding as the starter Bendix gear tries to mesh.

Mine had the bevel on both sides, but it wouldn't be hard to add one if I needed to.
