I leave a cable slightly loose and pull it off battery when not using. I also forget to do so and my vehicles doesn't drain the battery with a amp leak/short.

While it's off put a amp meter between the battery and either disconnected lead. There should be no reading less you have a electronic clock or a short.

Never a bad idea to have a disconnect for many reasons though.
