IMHO, if you are up to tackling replacing a head gasket, the least of your worries should be disturbing the timing. So many people fret over the timing for no good reason. Resetting the timing is so simple a job compared to removing and replacing the cylinder head. But, yes, so long as you do not loosen the cam in the distributor, you won't change the timing. As others have said, it goes back in only one way because of the offset slot in the shaft.
