I had the same question a couple months ago. It probably would have been easier to just remove the radius rod, but I ended up removing the e-brake lever to get the plate on with the radius rod in place. It wasn't all that hard to reinstall the lever and to hook the spring back on. Les Andrews should clarify those instructions in the next reprint of his manual.
