I know that it is possible to retain year of manufacture plates after they have been previously registered to an appropriate year vehicle in the owner’s name.

Does anyone know if it’s possible to retain/reserve a yom plate that has not been registered to a vehicle in the owner’s name?

Specifically I want to buy a set of plates for a future car and be able to keep the number “clear” in my name.

This question is for California only.
