Brent, the reason we don't normally don't redo the old inserts is, when the insert is new, they are a formed good, tight fit to what ever shell. You just size the hole in the rod to what ever size it calls for.
When you repour, the ends of the inserts will move in to each other, and they have to be spread back to a formed fit, and that is not always possible to get a 100% fit again.
So if you have a small spot, say the size of the end of your little finger that is away from the shell wall about a half a thousandths, the crank will either bring it into shape and it stays, or it keeps pushing it in and out until the babbitt fractures.
So when poured solid, no problems of that nature.
Now, main bearings, you don't have that worry, as the crank just turns in a circle.
But we have done rod inserts, when the owner won't take no for an answer, but if they come apart, I would't warranty, although we have never had a bad bearing ever come back.
Thank's
Herm.
