Same thing happened to my Holley 2100 couple years ago and I assumed something wrong with carburator. Pulled carb off and put on one of my reserve rebuilt carbs (I've got 3 spare carbs always ready to install).
Took it out and ran it on highway again, but when I got into town, couldn't keep it going without manually throttling up in neutral.
Turns out, the crappy chinese made ignition condenser was faulty. Took it out and put an old used condenser in the distributor. Still using it trouble-free for all kinds of driving.
