Re: gas line
You have the inlet valve in the fuel pump that should prevent the drain back to the tank. I am inclined to think that the fuel in the carb is leaking thru the power valve. The carb should retain enough gas to get the engine running and the fuel pump replenish the carb. Let the auto sit for couple of days and remove the top of the carb and see what the level of gas is. Then remove the body of the carb from its base and look for gas below the power valve.
