I was curious enough to press it apart. The bearings are all sealed and it has a mechanical seal that is spring loaded. I believe the problem is the seal allows coolant to to get around the seal flange and drain from the weep hole.
I'll end up eating this and buying a quality part.

Would some sealing compound like silicone or Permatex stop water getting around the flange? The spring loaded seal you refer to is probably a ceramic seal and should be good for your lifetime. I did say "should" but it is Mac's
