Post some pictures as to the issue that you have (the chipped gear). Unless it has a really bad chip in it, I would think it would not be an issue - especially if running an aluminum timing gear. You really should NOT try to use a 2-jaw puller on the crank gear . . . can easily just chip teeth and still not get it off.
You should really use a puller that is designed to pull crank gears - they support the whole underside of the gear. What I can't tell you is IF they can be used with the crank in the engine (pan off). My guess is that there is probably a special one made for a Flathead (to work while the crank is in the block), but I've never used on. Anybody know of one to use on an assembled engine???
