I'm not sure when it happened but I looked at a '64 pickup with its original block (as per the owner) that did not have a hole in the left front side of the casting for a road draft tube.
On this linked chart the latest block number is C2AE ('62) so maybe that's when they changed?
Unless Ford considered it a minor change only deserving a different last letter in the casting number.
