First, I love the car! Thanks for the pics.

The cotter key is in the drain hole for the flywheel housing. I was taught that the reason was for it to rattle around and keep the hole free of mud and grease, thus keeping it open. My car still has one. Personally I would spread yours out a bit so it can't be pushed up into the housing.
