I have done that job the hard way as you are doing (laying on the floor all dang day!). Didn't seem to mind when I was 18, hate it now! LOL
I've found that it is easier to just pull the whole rear and get it up at working height - actually saves time in the end. Also, it is much easier to check/set pinion preload, backlash and all that gory stuff. You may not need to worry about this stuff (if the rear was setup correctly - which one can ponder - given the welded axle).
To help my efforts, I made a plate to mount the rear end on my engine stand - has made my life a LOT better.
