It's difficult (obviously) to know if what you're experiencing is excessive for a '40 coupe.
They are not too noisy in my opinion. But yes, not nearly as air tight as a modern car.

There should be a seal at the front of the door between the hinges. Also, a seal that goes from the "B" pillar forward to the upper hinge on the body.
If those are absent, there's little to stop the wind from entering the car.
