Bad Bob, Model A heads require periodic re-tightening. Since you don't know when the last re-tightening was done, that should be top on your agenda. Follow the recommended sequence and torque to 55 foot-pounds in 10 foot-pound stages. Do this with the engine cold and repeat every 6 months. If you keep the head tight you probably won't need a head gasket.


I use the Best graphite gasket for the B engine with my Snyder 5.5 head. I used the copper spray gasket sealer.
