Wes, I am surprised. I used my 1940 Ford starter when I installed my 50 Merc flatty in my 40 Ford. The engine has the 1950 Merc flywheel, pressure plate and clutch and the stock 40 throw out bearing. Also used the 50 Merc stamped steel bellhousing with matching starter plate. This has worked for 50 years with no problems. Transmission is stock 1940.
