Many of the clutch release shaft ports in the clutch housing were not built with grease fittings. Both the bronze bushings and the shaft, itself, are usually badly worn. The geometry of the clutch linkage amplifies the sloppiness. Both the shaft and bushings are readily available. The part number for the shaft for '40 is 01A-7510, the bushings, come in two sizes, thin, 40-705, thick, 51A-7508. $49.50 and $3 or $9 dollars for the parts at C&G. (800/266-0470). Be sure to drill and install grease fittings when you replace the shaft.
