The Ford Motor Company began producing cars in 1903. The first design sold was the Model A. Later designs offered for sale were the Models B, C, F, K, N, R and S (I may have forgotten some). In the fall of 1908, the Model T was introduced. Many auto companies used the alphabet to designate their early models. For Ford, the letter T was just next in the alphabet. In 1927, when the number of Model T's (now an obselete design) sold fell drastically, a new design was introduced. Ford started the design series over with the 1928 Model A.
