It may have been a running engine when it was taken out of the car.
And the painted up.

And stored cold so it froze and cracked.

I Have a 8BA that was stored under a tarp and a little rainwater leaked in, and it froze an cracked the pan rails.

Anyway I never buy a flathead without the heads and pan off, or have agreed to return it if I find cracks or other bad stuff.

Otherwise I pay partsmoney only.
I know it to late for you but maybe some other can learn something.
