Mr adavis,
I have had similar problems as you are having. I think as you are saying in #5, The cam is rusted to the door handle. I have seen this quite a number of times. That will allow you to move the handle about an eighth of an inch as that is about as far as the cam can move inside the lock. Sometimes I have been able to get a screwdriver between the plates of the lock and the cam and and get it to start moving. Patience and a good penetrant such as Kroil is the best solution. You can beat it out, but it will ruin the lock and quite possibly the paint. Good Luck.
