Some of the 40-48 type side loader 3 speeds had the small top mounted vent and some did not. If the vent is there, the case not only had a hole in the top for the vent, but there would be an internal "baffle" which was part of the gear box casting itself. It was basically a flange of sorts that blocked the oil from spitting directly at the vent hole. If I remember correctly, the baffle had a kind of 90 degree shape to it. If that is not there, I'd guess someone might have simply drilled a hole for a vent in a case that never had one originally.
