Instead of steel wool you might try the Choir Girl Brass available in any grocery store cleaning section. It never rusts and if a piece goes down the tube it will do less harm than steel wool !

I also worry about small pieces of steel or copper falling into the oil pan so it seems to me that one of the
plastic "Chore Boy" pads would work just as well and less chance of damage if a piece falls into oil pan.
