Verify the overdrive works by bypassing the factory controls.
Try temporarily wiring around the factory controls to the solenoid. Run a wire from the solenoid to an on-off switch you or a passenger can easily reach while driving, and run a hot wire from the other side of the switch to the battery. Verify this activates the solenoid before starting up for a test drive. If good, then go for a test drive. Get up to 30 mph or so in high gear, turn on the switch, let off the gas, and it should activate overdrive. Turn off the switch to drop out of overdrive.
