Most automatics just had a fine screen till the more modern era of the 60s. The cast iron cases held stuff together pretty well unless a driver got stuck in the mud. I've seen a lot of cracked Cruise-O-Matic cases. The 2-speed Ford-O-Matic for the Falcon cars was Ford's first aluminum case type. Slipping clutch plates generated the lions share of metal particles if they ever start to slip. They were bronze on steel plates in all those early Ford cars.
