Running the wire and power to the resistor and coil is fine to get it started, if the battery is grounded to the frame of the stand but power has to be removed to stop the engine from running. Short of ripping one of the wires off a running engine a switch to open the ignition circuit is prefered. Plus if the engine stalls for any reason the coil need to be de-energized so it does not overheat. You don't have to use an original starter switch, a wall light switch works well.
