Many years ago I used to take my sailboat up into the Sacramento Delta. I met a guy who was running his speedboat around. It had a huge V8 inboard engine. I asked him how fast it would go. His answer was 100 mph, but at that speed the fuel consumption was 100 gallons per hour.
