The spring doesn't have to be very strong. I rummage through my box of springs and if I come up dry, then I go to the local hardware store and select something I think will do the job. I feel how much weight it has to support beforehand. I figure that even if I don't get it 100% right, anything will help.
It was just last week I had the exhaust off one of the cars that I had done this on and the spring held the exhaust up and it required only a gentle downward pressure to connect it to the manifold again. It made reconnection easy.
