the original starter has 1/2" shaft, but i think he tried another starter with the 5/8" shaft. he had the starters out sunday when i was at his house. i never got to see what is going on , but i wonder about the shims. i've heard about them before. why would the modern bendix rub to the point of scratching it up? another thing... looking in the starter openingyou could see little marks on the flywheel as though the gear was litterly walking around it.
