Old wive's tales. That is TOTALLY absurd.
We used to have contests pulling a certain very steep residential route up the south side of Queen Anne Hill in Seattle. Most of the engines involved at that time were 304 ci or bigger with 280 degree cams and 4 carbs.. Any one of those engines could pull the 20 degree hills with many 90 degree turns at 300 rpm, FULL throttle in second gear at 5 mph.
Two of these engines were ones that had turned over 130 at Bonneville.
