I guess I learned to drive on a jailbar Ford with four on the floor. I remember my dad referring to the "H" pattern for the gears. Its been a long time and I don't recall it being all that difficult. Of course any serious down shifting involved 'double clutching'. Regulating your foot on the gas with the one on the clutch to take off without staling the engine or slipping the clutch too much took some practice. Later on I graduated to "three on the tree" on a neighbour's Dodge pickup. It seems funny having to teach someone how to do a task that I can do myself without even thinking.
