Those drilled and tapped holes served a purpose all the way through flathead production. Here can be seen complete engines being moved either to or from the electric motor 'run-in' sequence, as these can be seen with the adapter for coupling with the electric motors. The brackets seen here for hanging the engines bolt to those tapped holes. What I'm seeing here almost suggests that these engines were hanging like this when painted.
