Bob, you are correct in that you will need to remove the rivets on the windlace trim pieces to install the new windlace. Originally, when installed in the plants, the windlace was stitched to a thin cardboard strip and covered in a paper sheath. It was then installed with the metal trim pieces and rivets, then all was painted. The paper was then removed, which kept the windlace from being painted along with the trim and rivet heads.
I might also add that in order to install new rivets, you will need to remove the side windshield trim pieces.
