Choose a hole punch that creates a nice round snug fitting to the pipe. You can experiment on a flat piece of rubber like an old radiator hose, inner tube or something to find the right punch if you have one of those sets that goes from maybe 1/8 to 3/4 inch. I haven't had one of those ever leak without a sealant but the Indian Head Shellac is a good idea.
