Todays oils and additives are much better than when these cars were originally produced - you can run just about any name-brand oil and you'll be fine. While many of our engines have been ran without any filtration, it surely can't hurt to put a bypass oil filter on. You have nothing to lose (except maybe a few bucks and some time), and everything to gain.
Is it necessary or "better" to put a full-flow system on - probably not, though some of us like to have 100% of our oil filtered in case some little piece of crap wants to run through our new bearings.
Glad you're putting a filter on your flatty . . . always a good idea!
