You didn't answer the question about which switch you are using. It makes a difference. The transmission is normally open the crossmember switch is normally closed.
Take a test light [ or voltmeter] and see when and where you have power and when you don't.
You may be using the wrong switch or it isn't adjusted correctly. As Tom mentioned there should be power to the switch at all times.
