You can't just push the collar forward on the shaft to get rid of end play.The shaft has the be held FORWARD.Holding it forward keeps the thrust washer between the impeller and rear bushing in place.Doing it your way will take up the slack,but then the loose washer will act like a lathe bit after a while,cutting into the shaft.I have run mine for years with no teflon or nylon washers.with a little grease on them there seems to be no ill effects.
