Gary, the '39 rumble handle mounting structure will be visible inside with the rumble lid partially open. The operating mechanism was a cable from the handle, across to a pulley on the right side of the lid, to another pulley just above and to the right of the lid, then over to the latch itself. Your lever behind the seat may have rerouted that original cable. In restoring the original mechanism, check the condition of those pulleys, and use good flexible stranded steel cable. My cable broke during use, necessitating the employ of a small person to climb inside from the passenger compartment to release the latch.
