Default Flushing a lever shock

My '48 ford has the old style lever shocks (I think Houdaille?). They seem to be in good shape so I was wanting to drain whatever is in them now and replace with fresh hydraulic jack oil. Is it ok to simply drain and replace the fluid or should they be flushed. If so what should be used to flush them out? I don't want to take the chance of putting something in there that may damage the internals and seals.
