I don't know if this will help but I had a similar problem on the trunk lid of my 52 Merc. Stayed up fine but no amount of adjusting would get the lid to sit down flush with the rest of the body. I experimented by removing one of the springs and now the lid sits down just fine. Only now I need a prop to hold the lid up when I 'm loading or unloading the trunk.
