The same can happen if you accept credit cards for payment.
Twice I have been "stiffed" by vendors that accepted my credit card for payment. I notified my credit card company, and they did their research and debited the vendor's account and credited mine.
There are horror stories out there about every type of transaction possible (bogus checks, bogus money orders, counterfeit money, etc)...some of them are actually true. The safest course is to never buy or sell anything.
