I have learned that this happens more often than you would care to believe.
I knew of a very much original 1930 Cabriolet about twenty years ago, that was left off at a shop to have some minor work done. Older guy owned the car, had suffered a minor stroke and couldn't do the work himself. Anyway, while the car was there the shop owner was swapping out original parts for repop parts off of this car, and using them on a buddy's Cabriolet. It was pretty obvious and when the owner came to get his car, he pointed it out to the shop. Of course they denied it, and the original owner couldn't prove it.
That shop is long gone.
