Do you have the wiring diagram? I somewhat depends on how you want to wire it up. All you need to fire the engine is a coil wire and yes I would use the resistor if you are going to run it for any length of time. The generator on a 37 uses a cutout so there is just one wire. You could wire up a starter solenoid, starter push button and a toggle switch for the ignition. Or just use jumper wires.

I attached a diagram I draw up a while back for a 12v neg ground system. A 6v would be similar with the polarity reversed. This one uses a later key ignition switch. The generator cutout wire would just connect to the battery side of the starter solenoid if you are wanting to connect it. If you need help I can draw you up a wiring diagram.
