My 1960 "Motor Manual" which covers the last of the flatheads (1953), says to use plasti-gage to check the clearance of the rotors to the end plate. The specs they quote are .0015 to .006". Sounds like you could make your own gasket, and check the clearance. If it's within specs, you should be OK.
