I was wondering what you measured, but I assumed you held the bell to the rear of the bearing retainer flange?
I just measured my U-joint to the flange of the bearing retainer and got 3 1/8" when I hold the U-joint slined output horizontal.
Here is a picture of the rear of my spare tranny ready to bolt in.
