I've used this same approach, except instead of using a 2X4, I just used my 48" carpenter's level as a straight edge to get the lights parallel to each other. Used the same level to adjust the vertical alignment. Hadn't seen the article, just used common sense. Glad to have written confirmation. Thanks Mike!
