This is correct.
Here's a pic of the bolts Ford recommended. These bolt eliminate much of the rotational movement and do make quite a difference. Regular bolts and studs will no be as precise but...

Years ago I had the similar thing happen to me. We did all the tests you did and determined that "all was fine" just as you did.
That engine ran perfectly...

Very interesting.
I followed you lead and called FelPro Tech Line (800-325-8886) and they told me the same thing, that is, DO NOT SOAK white seals in oil.
He said the rope seals used to be made...

Thanks, Ken for the info. I've had good results with the rope seals on a few 8ba's that I've built and always soaked them first. The RTV tips make sense also.

Just got off the phone with Drake sales rep and told him of the problem. He said to just put the code in the "comment box" and the sale price ($99.50) would be honored however there is NO free...

Here is a pic of some springs. The ones on the right are from a 49 Merc and are the same length and style exactly like the ones I removed from the 59ab.
The ones on the left are from an 8ba ford...
