I use the neoprene seal as suggested by Steve Becker from Berts. No hammering in,
no leaks, easy to install upside down.

about 4 or 5 years ago I rebuilt the rear end in my 30 coup with miss matched gears and it runs as quiet as my Cadillac, no noise what so ever.

Tom nailed it, mine had a knock at startup then would go away after a few seconds took the pan off found the center main lose removed .003 of shim all is quiet now.

Another possibility could be a collapsed spring behind the cam plunger allowing the cam to move back and forth. This happened to me on a 29 model a I owned about 62 years ago.

Read my post carefully I used a puller to remove the gear however a little heat with a propane torch wouldn't hurt and may help, warmed the gear to put it on, used the kitchen stove for heat...
