If you use the clamp method go easy with tightening, those gauges are tender. :)

You can hold it in with some epoxy like JB Weld or plumber's putty from the hardware store. Hold the gauge in tight and press a bead of epoxy around the side of it against the dash panel. If it works...

I wouldn't bother for a mostly stock motor. If you start with a clean motor, use good oil with the original filter and change the oil regularly you will be good to go with no worries.

I had a problem with a new repo front crank pulley hitting the front engine mounting yoke. Sounded real bad The yoke left marks on the spokes of the pulley.

Don't use a hardened steel punch on any bearing you may want to use again, the bearing can chip or crack. Brass is best but soft steel will work well too. :)
