Re: Steering Column Anti Rattler, 31 Cabriolet

If you mean the rubber insulator that goes around the column in the tank bracket, I put the seam on the bottom after trimming like 852. I put a coat of ArmourAll on the rubber to make it slide easier...

Re: Steering Column Anti Rattler, 31 Cabriolet

Do you mean the felt anti-rattlers that go on the spark and throttle rods inside the column? They go about halfway, next to each other.

Re: sign of the times

My son had an early ‘90s Toyota pickup with a stick and lived in Los Angeles. He told me that he never worried about it getting stolen, none of the crooks knew how to drive it. Finally drove it...

Re: cam lube

Lubriplate 105 assembly lube for me, including lifters and lobes. It’s kinda heavy white grease.

Back in high school we were taught to dip everything in STP during assembly. Including all...

Re: Fuse size

As Jim says, the fuse (or circuit breaker, in my case) protects from a dead short, which would be hundreds of amps. The increase in protection from say a 20A fuse will be minuscule compared to a 30A,...

Re: Grease in 2-tooth

Thanks, Randy. I've never run across this before, mainly because I don't recall ever seeing a requirement for a specific NLGI grade. "Waterproof wheel bearing grease" is about as specific as I can...

How, pray tell, does one quantify greasiness?

Re: Thank You

Looks like a real survivor! Have fun with it. Ice cream and kids in the rumble seat - what’s not to like about that?

Oh yeah, wife too.

Is that about a ‘64 Fairlane (or whatever they called it...

Re: Front bumper arm help needed

The best thing you can do is to remove both brackets from the car, then lay them on top of each other and check that the curvatures match. It’s not so important what the curvature is, but that they...

Re: Tight crank gear

For applications like this, I wait until my bride is elsewhere, then heat the oven up to 450-500 and put the gear/race/bearing/whatever in for a half hour or so after the temperature stabilizes....

Re: New Shocks vs Rebuilt Shocks

I attempted to rebuild the shocks for my ‘30 Town Sedan and it was a humbling failure - they leaked like sieves. I sent them to Brentwood Bob and he rebuilt them for me. Smooth action, they look...

Re: Lifting 30 Tudor body

I lifted my 30 Town Sedan body off the frame starting by jacking as Marshall did, then 4x4s under the body. I then ran slings from the 4x4s to an overhead gantry crane, then lifted the body using the...

Re: Fitting Spindle Bolt - King pin in new bushings

Keith - You can use a spring-loaded brake cylinder hone to smooth out from the reamer and open more if necessary. Available at any good auto parts store (like, independent or NAPA, not...

Re: Water Pump Options

Easiest, and you can do it without removing the water pump from the head, is to add in another layer of the leaded packing and see if it works. Don't remove the old, put the new on top of it. If that...

Bob - I just went through this (also a 30 TS). My front spring had three broken leaves when I disassembled it.

The Eaton Detroit Model A standard duty front spring is an 8-leaf equivalent to the...

Re: Removing stuck distributor and lower shaft

After I clean up the lower portion and get to shiny metal, I put a light coat of copper anti-seize on it. Maintains electrical continuity and also helps prevent sticking.

Re: Horn

To get to the button you need to pull the horn rod out. The button assembly is attached within the light handle by a keeper with four tabs, accessible from the back of the handle.

Re: Horn

This explains it much better. Here’s how I would proceed:

1. Disconnect battery
2. Remove both wires from the horn and secure them so they don’t touch each other, nor any metal.
3. Reconnect...

Re: Horn

Thanks, Synchro, good points. I made the presumption that since he can get the horn to work the issue was likely external, not internal. At least that’s easier to troubleshoot.

Re: Horn

Tom - the horn operates on an interrupted ground basis. Power is fed to the horn, through the horn, then to the light switch bundle. When you depress the horn button you complete the path from the...
