The condensor (distributor) is heating up. Also, the keyed wire going into the base of the dist can be (screwed) in too far and do this too.

I don't quite understand why the thing is so tight. ...

Yeah it is the know-how. I had a motor redone, and the machinist started doing it as a hobby when her retired. Then he found out he wasn't really retired because people were constantly brining him...

How fast (MPH) are you going at 230F? How many RPM are you turning at this speed (say 35 or 40 MPH)?

Does this car have one of those steam tubes that goes back tot he engine, like the LS motors...

From a function perspective you are correct, since I have had both. The gauge is very handy. The ornaments doo look cool though.
